Your book

Where is my book saved?

On your iPhone, and — when iCloud Drive is on for Handed Down — also in your own iCloud account. Changes are saved automatically. There is no account with us, and your book never reaches our servers.

How do I turn on iCloud for my book?

Open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud → iCloud Drive, and make sure Handed Down is on. In the app, the book screen shows Only on this iPhone while iCloud is off; tap it for the same steps. Once it is on, your book comes back after you reinstall the app or set up a new iPhone with the same Apple Account.

How do I back up my book or move it to a new iPhone?

On the book screen, tap ⋯ and choose Back up book. Save the file to Files, iCloud Drive or send it with AirDrop. On the other iPhone, install the app, tap ⋯ → Restore from backup and pick the file. The backup includes your original photos and everything you wrote.

I deleted a recipe by mistake.

Tap Undo right away, at the bottom of the screen. Once it is gone, the recipe can only come back from a backup file.

Cards and text

Can I add cards from the Photos app?

Yes. In Photos (or any app), select up to 30 pictures, tap Share and choose Handed Down. Next time you open the app, you sort them into recipes before they go in your book.

My card was photographed at an angle.

Open the recipe, choose Crop & rotate this page and drag the four corners onto the corners of the card. The page comes out straight. Your original photo is always kept, and Reset brings it back.

The text from my card has mistakes.

Handwriting is hard to read, even for a phone. Lines that look misread or missing are marked Check this; compare them with the card at the top and type the right text. You can also skip text altogether — the card itself always appears in your book.

Will the app change my recipe?

No. Amounts, units and steps are never changed for you, and nothing is made up.

Widget and iPhone Duo

How do I add the Recipe of the Day widget?

Touch and hold an empty spot on your Home Screen, tap Edit → Add Widget, search for Handed Down and choose a size. It shows a different recipe from your book each day; tap it to open that page.

Does it work on iPhone Duo?

Yes. Unfold it and the book opens across both halves of the screen, with the spine on the fold. Folded, it works like any iPhone.

Purchases

How many recipes are free?

Your first 3 recipes make a complete small book, free and without a watermark. The one-time Unlimited purchase unlocks the rest. There is no subscription.

I bought Unlimited, but the app doesn’t show it.

Make sure you are signed in with the same Apple Account you used to buy it. When the Unlimited screen appears, tap Restore purchase.

How do I get a refund?

Purchases are handled by Apple. Request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com.

Printing

How do I print my book?

Tap Preview book, then Finish book. Choose a book style and page size, then Save PDF. Print the PDF at home or send it to a printing service. Choose US Letter for home printers and 6×9 inch for most printed books. We recommend ordering a single proof copy first.
